COUNTDOWN: As of today, there remains 1,344 more days in this horrible administration’s term in office…
A few posts back I began this series, showing how Congress is so bought-out by greedy special interests they seldom if ever take the time to think of us ordinary citizens. In part one I focused on prominent Republicans, as they are currently the party in power. In this post, I will feature a few prominent Democrats, as well as more Republicans.
I have long been strongly against the amassed economic, social, and political power now present in big business and corporations. They exert an anti-democracy, confirmist influence I find to be extremely oppressive. While espousing “freedom” they actually practice its opposite, exercising undue
monopolistic control over far too much in our society, economy, and its government. Thanks to both Open Secrets and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), we have information on exactly why Congress is so easily misled…
Today we’ll start with SEN. JOE MANCHIN, the Democrat from West Virginia. This corporate shill all too often votes with Republicans rather than with his own party. His daughter runs a pharmaceutical firm which makes Epi-Pens, and she was in the news not too long ago for having raised the price of that medication by an unforgivably astounding amount. As you can see, one of the reasons for this is the huge amount of campaign contributions which were donated to Manchin by his daughter’s company, Mylan Inc. During his past election cycle, Manchin raised $14.8 MILLION, spent $9.3 MILLION, and still has a campaign war chest of $9.8 MILLION.
Manchin’s top donors from 2011 – 2016 have been:
FirstEnergy Corp $115,950
Mylan Inc $60,750 (his daughter’s pharmaceutical company)
Dominion Resources $60,650
Centene Corp $48,500
Mepco LLC $45,000
His top Industry donors, 2011 – 2016 were:
Lawyers/Law Firms $373,500
Electric Utilities $371,750
Securities & Investment $261,600
Leadership PACs $214,000
With the huge amount donated by big pharma and bankers, we shouldn’t wonder too long about why Manchin so often votes with the GOP or why regular working people can never seem to get much of a break in this country.
REP. LOUIE GOHMERT, Republican of Texas, 1st District.
During the last election cycle, Gohmert raised $1.9 MILLION, spent $2 MILLION, and still has cash on hand of $124,000, left over from previous campaigns.
His top campaign donors were:
Koch Industries $15,000 (yes, he has notorious Koch brothers money behind him)
Texas Timberjack $7,850
Energy Future Holdings Corp $6,250
National Assn of Realtors $6,000
American Electric Power $6,000
Hi stop donor industries, 2015 – 2016, were:
Oil & Gas $34,200
Health Professionals $26,600
Misc. Finance $21,750
Is it any wonder this Texan voted numerous times to repeal the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare?
SEN. ROBERT MENENDEZ, Democrat from New Jersey, as you will see, is strongly supported by, among others, the health industry. In the past election cycle, he raised $19.7 MILLION, spent $21.7 MILLION, yet still has $2.6 MILLION on hand, left over from previous campaigns. His top donors were:
Prudential Financial $100,850
Lowenstein Sandler LLP $78,697
Leon Medical Centers $76,800
Greenberg Traurig LLP $72,500
Top 5 Industries, 2011 – 2016:
Lawyers/Law Firms $1,602,261
Real Estate $1,106,750
Securities & Investment $701,001
Health Professionals $684,291
With all that money pouring in from Lobbyists, Insurance companies, and Bankers, how can we mere citizens ever expect to get his attention?
REP. DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ, a Democrat from the 23rd district in FL. In the 2016 election cycle, she raised more than $23 MILLION; spent more than $27 MILLION, and, due to previous campaigns, still has nearly $603,000 to spend for 2018.
Her top campaign donors this cycle have been:
Comcast Corp $38,215
Leon Medical Centers $36,600
New Democrat Coalition $32,500
NextEra Energy $31,750
Breakthru Beverage Group $31,400
Her top contributing industries, 2015 – 2016 were:
Lawyers/Law Firms $342,113
Securities & Investment $185,552
Real Estate $184,427
Health Professionals $121,772
The large amount donated to her by Comcast explains her lack of support on net neutrality issues. It also has helped lay the groundwork for a lawsuit brought against her and the DNC for willfully helping Hillary Clinton at the expense of Bernie Sanders prior to last summer’s Democratic Convention…
SEN. JEFF FLAKE, Republican of AZ. This relative newcomer to the Senate is up for re-election in 2018. He has raised $16 MILLION, spent $16.1 MILLION, and has cash on hand of more than $1.2 MILLION, left over from previous campaigns.
His top 5 donors were:
Club for Growth $1,012,$1,009,875
Senate Conservatives Fund $176,484
American Airlines Group $118,700
Express Scripts $62,100
Top major industries, 2011 – 2016, have been:
Real Estate $453,550
Securities & Investment $439,
Leadership PACs $341,368
The very large amount of money given Flake by such Koch brothers-influenced allies as Club for Growth and conservative PACs and investment firms practically guarantee that this partisan Senator will NEVER act or vote for the benefit of everyday Americans!
This just about explains why Congress seldom acts in your best interests, folks! Should you need even more convincing, be sure to look for part three of this intermittent series, which should appear soon…
