I first heard of this remarkably true piece thanks to FREE SPEECH TV when Thom Hartmann recited it on his morning show the late morning of last Monday. It was originally published back in 2004 by a man whose name is John Gray, and it also appeared in the blog The Daily Kos. This piece rings true even more so today than it did in 2004! See if you don’t agree:
“Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised.
All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.”
I have long deplored and been mystified at the hatred some very narrow-minded conservative/reactionary/libertarian people have had for progressives and liberals. Their hatred is irrational and completely unfounded. I do NOT in the least share their view that “government is the problem and not the solution” or that government has no business regulating industry. They obviously don’t care in the least, but government and labor unions as well serve as the only real protection workers have from the greedy excesses of the corporatists and many members of the billionaire class! This attitude that the market should be a wide open, anything goes, to the victor must belong all the spoils is unjust and thoroughly indefensible. For many of these people, especially the billionaire Koch brothers-types, are of the ruthless, lying, conniving libertarian mold who wish to end all government involvement in business completely, merely because they want to be able to pollute and fix prices for their own profit at everybody else’s expense. These people are despicable, wholly self-centered, and extremely short-sighted. That’s why this blogger, and many millions of others, vehemently disagree with them. We will do all we can to limit their corrupting influence over our government – at all levels – from city hall to statehouses, up to Congress and even the White House! We are resolutely determined to show them that the market is NOT a wild, wild west where they can do whatever they damn well please and to hell with all the rest of us! For, unless one has devious motives, government and government regulations are an important and necessary fact in a civilized society. That’s why it is so important that we get billionaire and corporate money OUT of politics, and the words of the wise and great Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1936 still ring true today and always will: “Government by organized money is just as dangerous as government by organized mob!”
Take THAT, self-centered Trump voters and greedy Koch brothers allies!
It is time once again for a FREE SPEECH TV end of the year fundraising drive. I strongly urge you to contribute as generously as you can to FSTV, for they are completely viewer-supported; have been for more than 20 years; and receive absolutely NO funding whatsoever from corporations or the government! That’s why they can boldly speak truth to power and report all aspects of the real news, rather than omitting, distorting, or slanting news the way the corporate-owned mainstream media does constantly. Your contribution is 100% TAX DEDUCTIBLE as they are non-profit, and will ensure the uninterrupted continuance of this vitally incorruptible national treasure. Please visit their website at http://www.freespeech.org/ or call them toll-free at -877-378-8669. You can choose from a number of thank-you gifts they will offer you for your generosity if you like, or you can even arrange to donate an old unused vehicle or piece of property to keep you from pulling funds out of your checking or bank account. ANY amount you may wish to pledge will be welcomed and greatly appreciated – plus, you can even arrange for a small monthly amount to be diducted if that would work better. But please DO consider helping this valuable resource out – TODAY! Thank you VERY much! 🙂
