Sept. 28, 2015 By Jack Jodell (in association with BURR DEMING of Fair And UNbalanced.Com – see my Blogroll in the lower right – hand column).
Happy last Monday of the month, everybody. The modern-day, Tea Party-infested reactionary Republican Party is seemingly obsessed with conspiracy theories. From Benghazi to Hillary’s emails, from the Iran nuclear agreement to the Affordable Care Act to climate change, they see many a conspiracy where none actually exists. This has always been the case with conservatives, who tend to be somewhat paranoid by nature. In the early 1950s, they saw nonexistent communists under every bed; 50 years later they were seeing radical Islamic terrorists everywhere, even at baseball stadiums.
In today’s podcast, our podcaster extraordinaire Burr Deming examines this propensity of conservatives, and takes us back to 1972 and the shooting of conservative presidential candidate George Wallace to illustrate how dirty tricks Republican President Dick Nixon and his cohorts deliberately tried to pin the shooting on followers of prominent liberal Democrats. Nixon knew that if he succeeded in his phony politicization of this horrible shooting, he would cynically eventually benefit at the polls. You know: a classic case of the ends justifying the means. Just as today’s conservatives are attempting to do with nearly every political issue. Burr makes a quite valid comparison between then and now…
In Burr’s own words, “Our species has always faced the temptation of drawing lines of hatred. We have often changed our vision of those on the other side of those lines from that of human beings into that of abstractions, into ‘them.’ It is the logic embraced by much of what has come to be called ‘the base’…the logic of blood. We know they would kill us, because we would kill them.
So we must get rid of them first.”
