In the wake of the Extreme Court‘s disastrously ridiculous Citizens United ruling, which effectively negated all limits on political donations by corporations or their wealthy owners, we have seen an ever-increasing flood of donations by these groups. Most of this money has funneled its way into the reactionary Republican Party’s coffers, either through secretive anonymous donations to shadowy political action committees (PACs) like American Crossriads and Club for Growth, to name just two, or openly, by brazenly outspoken members of the wealthiest 1% who feel threatened by virtually any policy which may end up costing them any money at all. Today, I will focus on two of these misguided and selfish wealthy uber-conservatives. I also urge you to “hit ’em where it hurts” and I will explain that at the end.
SHELDON (“Why is it fair that I should be paying a higher percentage of taxes than anybody else?”) ADELSON just doesn’t get it. This snobbish and arrogant member of the rich elite (estimated net worth = $24.9 BILLION) has promised to spend an “unlimited” amount of money to evict the President from the White House and restore control of the Executive Branch to the Republicans. Originally a Massachusetts-born Democrat, he became disenchanted with them by their support of labor unions as he himself grew increasingly wealthier. He and his wife have begun donating millions both to Republican presidential and congressional candidates alike. His beneficiaries have included such rich and far-right notables as Nut Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Carly Fiorina, and Sharron Angle. This piggish billionaire owns the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, the Venetian Resort and Hotel casino, and the overseas operations Venetian Macao and Manila Bay Sands. “What scares me,” Adelson has said, “is the continuation of the socialist-style economy we’ve been experiencing for almost 4 years.” In the first place, that is presposterous because a “socialist-style economy” has NOT been instituted in this country. Furthermore, his jump from Democrats to his blatant financial support for far-right Republicans is evidence of how deluded and mentally unstable this ogre has become.
STEVE WYNN is another prominent wealthy casino owner (estimated net worth = $2.5 BILLION) who was formerly a Democrat but has now been giving MILLIONS to that detestable Karl Rove‘s equally detestable far-right Super PAC American Crossroads. He is the CEO of Wynn Resorts, Limited, which owns and operates the following casinos and hotels: Golden Nugget, The Mirage, Bellagio, Wynn, Encore, and, in Mississippi, Beau Rivage. Wynn recently lamented on Fox “News”, that “… What is ostensibly the base of the Democratic Party is taking the worst hit in history because of these unbelievably uninformed policies of this president and his colleagues, who have fostered this ridiculous class warfare…” Ummm, excuse me, Mr. Wynn, but it has not been the Democrats raising “ridiculous class warfare” notions: these notions have been TRUE. They have manifested themselves time and again in regressive Republican economic policies, from the outsourcing of American jobs to busting unions to “trickle down economics” (which never trickled down, by the way) to Bush’s ridiculous tax cuts for the rich, ad nauseum, So, Mr. Wynn, your worries about the future of the country under Democratic or progressive hands are totally unfounded, Your donating of millions to Karl Rove was evidence of how severely deluded you have become. It is truly regrettable.
Both of these men, in their selfish paranoia, have charted courses which are definite assaults on the very people whom they need for support: the lower 99% MAJORITY of the income scale, who change the bedding in their hotels; who work in and gamble at their casinos. Consequently, I am calling for an all-out BOYCOTT OF ALL HOTELS AND CASINOS OWNED BY SHELDON ADELSON OR STEVE WYNN! These men need to be taught a lesson for having engaged in an assault on the American worker by supporting far-right, anti-worker candidates. Their throwing money around like it is only paper, and their blatant disregard for the needs of the MAJORITY 99% can no longer be condoned. Though a boycott of this type may prove costly short-term for hotel and casino employees, in the long run all will benefit. Perhaps if we nail these billionaires and hit ’em where it hurts – in their pocketbooks, they will eventually come to their senses and stop this insane showering of un-American, far-right candidates with money!
