I received two separate, disturbing pieces of junk mail from the far-right last week. One was an appeal for a donation to the Republican Party. I wrote a scathing reply which I returned to them in their postage-paid reply envelope. The other was from a blatantly reactionary group called the Faith and Freedom coalition, and my reply to them forms the basis for this specific post.

This Faith and Freedom nonsense began with a letter from ultra-conservative radio talk show host Mark Levin,  and was full of typically paranoidal and urgent warnings about the future of this country should Barack Obama and congressional Democrats be re-elected. It promises to “oppose the Obama agenda” and asks the recipient to fill out and return a “Call-To-Action” Pledge to Vote” survey with a donation to said group.

The survey itself was disgustingly transparent, with not even the slightest attempt at actual  objectivity. Chock full of far-right, religious-right opinionated and loaded questions, it was designed by founder Ralph E. Reed to incite extremists to vote against the President (a moderate centrist, at most) as well as against all progressives.  Additionly, he is attempting to persuade them to donate more than $31 MILLION to his cause. These donations would help this crazed group send out 40 MILLION “voting guides” in a number of key swing districts! While claiming to be non-partisan, their bias is clear. Their stated aim is to “identify, educate, and register millions of brand new, pro-freedom patriots” to vote in the election. Those are, of course, code words for extremist, very conservative, reactionary pro-Republican voters.

The survey came in an official-looking heavier paper that deceptively appeared as if it may have originated from some state or federal government office. It had my Representative’s as well as my Senators’ names listed near the top, and was titled “2012 Voter Registration Confirmation Survey.” Below that, in bold red print, were the words “EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!” followed by, in black print, “If you choose not to participate in this 2012 VOTER REGISTRATION AND CONFIRMATION SURVEY & PLEDGE TO VOTE CAMPAIGN for whatever reason, we would be most appreciative if you would still return this survey blank so we can fully account for every survey we mail and don’t spend needed resources trying to track down what might have happened to it. We must account for every survey we mail.” Uh-huh. Yuh. OK, boss. Pretty damn obsessive and demanding for a bunch of far-right, misguided crackpots!

The questions themselves were outrageous. The very first one asked,
1). “How do you rate Barack Obama’s overall performance as President so far?” This was followed by fill-in-the-ovals spots before each of these responses: “Excellent”, “Good”, “Poor”, “Abysmal”, or “I consider him an enemy of liberty and the values that built our great nation.”Another question followed, asking,
2). “Do you think Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro see President Obama as an ally of theirs? Or do you think Chavez was just joking about President Obama’s Communist beliefs?” The answers to select from on this one were
: “I think Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro see President Obama as an ally of theirs”, or “I do not think Chavez and Castro see President Obama as an ally of theirs.”
The next question read,
3). “When Fidel Castro labeled the passage of ObamaCare  as “a miracle”, do you think this is because he is honestly concerned with the well-being of Americans? Or is it more likely that Castro sees ObamaCare to be the fastest, surest way to bring Socialism or worse) to America? The responses given for this question were equally as leading and ludicrous as they were for the first two.
Question no. 4 was phrased,
4). “Do you think Leftists like Congressman John Dingell, Nancy Pelosi, and Barack Obama are truly looking to improve health care quality and affordability in America? Or do you think they are mostly using the government takeover of health care as a way to get more control over your life?”
Continuing onward, question no. 8 asked,
8). “What do you think is President Obama’s true political ideology?”, which was followed by these choices: “Mostly conservative”, “Moderate”, “Far-Left”, “Socialist”, “Fascist”, “Not Sure”, or “Other”.
An additional doozy was question 9, which asked,
9). “How much danger do you think liberty is in right now as a result of President Obama’s policies, actions, and agenda for America’s future? The responses for this inflammatory question were listed with the recipient being able to check as many as they thought applied, and were listed as “More serious than the threats we faced in World War II from Nazi Germany and the Japanese because the attack on liberty today is from our own government”, and “More serious than the threat we faced from the Soviet Union during the Cold War”, and “More serious than the American Civil War”, as well as “All of the above?, and “Undecided”.

They also ask how you would define your political views, ranging from very conservative to libertarian to very liberal,.

After asking if you are registered to vote (and, if you are not, they offer to send you one of their “Faith and Freedom Coalition Voter Registration kits”), you are asked to pledge to try and bring like-minded friends and relatives along with you to vote on November 6.

I find this survey to be very misleading, offensive,  and strongly biased. It infers that the President is anti-faith and anti-liberty. I also object to this being called the Faith and Freedom Coalition, because its deceitfully paranoid phrasing and apperance have  little in common with faith OR freedom and represent a very narrow and twisted perspective on each of those things. A much more appropriate name would be The FEAR Coalition, being that it is unnecessarily alarmist as well. Faith and Freedom Coalition: rather than return this piece of garbage so you can avoid having to track it down, I will instead use it as yoilet paper and flush it away where it belongs.

This piece of garbage is a perfect example of why the Bush Tax Cuts for the Wealthy must NOT be extended! To allow wealthy, anti-government crackpots the extra money with which to circulate unsolicited inflammatory pieces of junk like this must be strictly forbidden! This pseudo-Christian successor to the despicable Pat Robertson‘s original Christian Coalition of the 1990s must not receive continued tax breaks of any kind, nor should any of its wealthy 1% followers! Doing so would be an affront to the MAJORITY 99%, and we have had enough of this failed “trickle-down” nonsense which never has trickled down!

    10) How much do you believe Barack Obama enjoys torturing adorable puppies in his secret underground lair? “A lot” “Greatly” “Quite a bit” “Moderately”

    11) How many captured Christian virgins does Barack Obama sacrifice to Satan each day? “Four” “Three” “Two” “One” “I’m a Satanist myself”

Well, those would be only slightly more blatant that the questions they actually asked you. They’re probably sincere about those questions, though. The more out-there answers would be a great way to identify the complete paranoid fruit-loops who will donate money and time whenever they’re asked.

…donations would help this crazed group send out 40 MILLION “voting guides” in a number of key swing districts!

Voting guides, aka propaganda. The terribly sad part of all of this, Jack, is that many of The People fall for it. The level of political ignorance here in the Land of the Free is frightening. I even see it in more progressive people who I ‘work’ with in the Obama office.

People [progressive or conservative] are not interested in details; rather, they absorb the tag lines and run with them. For example, before we head out on a door-to-door event, we have to sit the people down to educate them on the facts. I see many who seemingly are ‘learning’ the facts for the very first time.

Propaganda is powerful; concentrated study is required to scuttle the hype and learn the facts- a process that, seemingly, is too tedious for many of The People. Thus, enter the hucksters like Ralph Reed. Note that, as a Christian huckster, he’s a pro at his game.

Your comments on propaganda and the ignorant state of many Americans is terrifyingly true. As for the crazily shrewd Reed, why does he bother to waste time on propaganda when there is plenty to criticize the real Obama about? I mean, his failure to restore the writ of habeus corpus, his ever-increasing reliance on surveillencr drones, and his bailout of Wall Street while leaving Main Street to hang should provide enough actual fodder for anuone…

It’s always interesting to see what garbage spews out of the right wing crazies. I have not gotten any printed surveys, but have had 5 robo-calls urging me to vote for Romney to stop Obama from destroying our country. Although I know it does no good, I have almost broken my telephone handset slamming it down. Since the calls are always recorded I don’t have the opportunity to tell them what I think. Very frustrting.

    • jackjodell53 says:

I share your frustrayion with robocalls. I rarely get them, but when I do, I hang up right away too.

  4. Hello Jack,
Yes the Republican policies of the first part of the decade have done more economic damage to me and my family than any Democratic legislation ever had…..and there are those who want to return or continue these exact same policies…….Bastards!!!

    • jackjodell53 says:

      Helo, Engineer of Knowledge,
Regrettably, nearly the entire country is in your same boat. Trickle down merely cascaded UP, and now the rest of us are parched!

  5. JollyRoger says:

The Klanservative Klanbagging Kochsuckers are just using euphemism after euphemism for “N____r,” which is what they really want to say. And their inbred “base” understands that all too well, in spite of understanding nearly nothing else. Since they can’t scream the word that they all want to scream, they just keep coming up with more, and crazier, euphemisms.

  6. That so-called survey is what’s called push polling. They do it by phone, too. The questions are meant to plant seeds in your mind, impart suspicions and imressions, not elicit your thoughts. There is an element to some of them of the old lawyer’s joke, where an accused person is asked by the prosecutor, “So, Mr. Smith, do you beat your wife as often as you used to?”

The mailing you got would be laughable if it wasn’t for the fact so many gullible, dim-witted and/or ideologically warped people believe every bit of it.

    • jackjodell53 says:

You nailed it, S.W., especially with your last sentence. It is a real pity that those idiots are voters.

  7. JJ says:

I received a mailing from Lonna Hoffman supposedly from Vermillion OH raising questions about the deficit and how the President’s 2013 budget proposal doesn’t come close to reducing said deficit. I had no problem with that. Problem is she closed with “Get him out or learn Chinese”. IF, the fringe unit stuck with the facts, they might have a chance in swaying voters to their point of view, but when you add this type of inflammatory, knee jerk rhetoric you just end up looking stupid. My mother always said “Honey, the truth is naked. A lie is dressed up in a Sunday frock”.

    • jackjodell53 says:

Thank you for stopping by and offering the comment. That Lonna Hoffman remark is typical of the sort of blatant hypocrisy and racism we have seen in recent years coming from the GOP. The nuances of conducting complicated trade deals with other countries is too complex for them to grasp, so they whittle their “solutions” down to simplistic, anti-foreigner jargon. After all, if you’re not 100% like them or 100% with them, then you’re just no good…

Fine way of explaining, and pleasant post to take information regarding
my presentation focus, which i am going to convey in college.
