THOUGHTS TO MULL OVER

By Jack Jodell, July 20. 2011

The entire country is gripped in a horrific heat wave; the ultra-reckless and overly-conservative Tea Party and Republican Party are poised to destroy more than 225 years of prosperity in this country by refusing to raise the nation’s debt ceiling; the wealthy and corporations are paying an effective tax rate FAR BELOW that of the rest of the civilized world and even far below what they did during RONALD REAGAN’S presidency; millions upon millions remain unemployed (and the Congress is doing NOTHING to solve the problem).  Same old bullcrap; different day. It’s time once again for some more quotes from people with real brains. (which, of course excludes John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Mitch McConnell, Rush Limbaugh, or Michele Bachmann), so here goes:

“All religions must be related, for every man must get to heaven his own way.” – Epictetus –

“Men are governed only by servung them; the rule is without exception.”
– V. Cousin –

“Leaders should lead as far as they can and then vanish. Their ashes should not choke the fire they have lit.”
– H.G. Wells –

“Man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them.”
– Adlai Stevenson –

“Nothing endures but change.”
– Heraclitus –

“To the cheater, there is no such thing as honesty, and to the Republicans the idea of serving the public good is counterfeit on the face of it – they never felt such an urge, and therefore it must not exist.”
– Garrison Keillor –

“We have two ears and one tongue so that we would listen more and talk less.”
– Diogenes –

“Try not to become a man of success, but a man of value.”
– Albert Einstein –

“As the purse is emptied, the heart is filled.”
– Victor Hugo –

“If a man is proud of his wealth, he should not be praised until it is known how he employs it.”
– Socrates –

“A rich man without charity is a rogue; and perhaps it would be no difficult matter to prove that he is also a fool.”
– Henry Fielding –

“All people are born alike – except Republicans and Democrats.”
– Groucho Marx –

” You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
– Wayne Gretsky –

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
– Winston Churchill-

An imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics.”
– Plutarch –

LISTEN TO THE WISDOM OF PLUTARCH, CORPORATISTS, TEABAGGERS, AND REPUBLICANS!

About jackjodell53

I am an American Dissident trapped in a country where poor and middle class people are constantly being exploited and lied to by a very rigid and conservative plutocratic elite. I believe in government OF, FOR, and BY the people, not one controlled as it now is by corporations and special interests.

  1. I was taken with the Heraclitus quote, “Nothing endures but change.” For years I’ve been saying, and sometimes writing, that change is the one constant of life.

As I would expect, Churchill’s comment is superb. It brings to mind how badly many of our fellow Americans need to get a life.

    S.W.,
That means you are quite a philosopher in your own right! Great people, among them those two, always inspire and amaze us with their great thoughts, don’t they?

  3. JollyRoger says:

Klanbaggers don’t like paying their debts. They’re well known for it. The whole Klanbagger mentality always has someone ELSE picking up the tab.

  4. mudrake says:

Klanbaggers Now that’s an interesting term. Where did it originate?

Jack- you appear just as weary as I am. It is as if most of America has lost its mind. Hopefully, though, there will be enough sensible people going to the polls in 2012 to cast their vote for progress and sanity.

    Meanwhile, we endure…

  5. Stimpson says:

I especially like the Einstein and Socrates quotes. Who knew the Wizard of Oz scarecrow was so smart after all? 😉

      Stimpson,
HAAAAA—I, too, am partial to the Socrates quote, and also to the ones from Plutarch and Churchill!

  6. Hello Jack,
What a good current topic as there is a great injustice going on here in the United States and the Tea Party within the Republican Party is leading the way. This current issue of raising the debt limit is not about reducing purchases in the future but paying for what has already been bought and delivered……Like bomb, bullets, rockets, missiles, etc. that is paying for two wars and now adding Libya’s drone attacks. This all costs money. The Low Information Voters of the Ultra-Conservative have no idea what is really at hand here with this current topic.

All the Tea Party members in congress will achieve to accomplish is to ruin this country’s credit and world wide banking outlook. They will do much more damage to our economy by accent and ignorance than anything before on purpose.

It is time that Moderate Republicans take back their own Party and purge these Nut Baggers out.

  7. Great choices here. Hard to say which are my favorites. Churchill, of course, and Diogenes, but I really love Stevenson’s. And then there’s . . . .

Glad you liked them, Leslie! It is amazing when we consider how wise so many of those who came before us were, isn’t it?
